Does age matter? #MondayMusings

No, I am not talking about your age. Let me clarify. How do you think of yourself in the young-old spectrum? How old are you? Is seventy old for you? How about thirty? When do you think of yourself or anyone as old? And enlighten me what old means to you.

I turned 35 last Friday. Believe it or not, I don’t feel a day older or younger than the previous day. Just like Kanna said after celebrating his 8th birthday, “I don’t feel older, taller or bigger.”

I have celebrated these many birthdays to know that flip of a calendar page doesn’t bring changes on a person as such. Growth is rather a slow process unless you are a newborn where growth is visible to the naked eyes every single day.

I have seen and heard people making such a big deal about getting old. As in turning 30 and you are done. It’s time to pack up and go home. And all the subsequent birthdays are welcomed with sympathy. Of course, one can never argue with I’m too old now that I turned 30 arguments. Trust me I’m not making this up. I’ve heard this quite a lot and hearing the “old age stories” is making me feel dizzy again.

As far as I’m concerned, age does not and doesn’t have to define anyone. You can be old or young but that is for you to decide, not your age. You can wear colorful outfits, jewelry, makeup, bike, fall in love, play in rain, enroll in college, and do anything you desire to if you want to and your health and wealth permit you to or you can not do any of these if that’s what you want to do. But hey, don’t you drink or drive or marry before your legal age, that’s a no-no even if you think that you can very well manage.

My point being, don’t let your age define you. You can be anything you want to be at any age. All it takes is your willingness and commitment. You might find it silly, but whenever I ask Kanna what he wants to become when he grows up, I add what I would like to become when I grow. One should never let their dreams and desires shackled by something so simple as age. I for one is happy that I woke up on my 35th birthday and was able to celebrate. I would very well be happy to celebrate my 70th birthday without complaining about the number if I get to wake up on that day too.

What are your thoughts about age and getting older? Are you bothered by the growing number of grey hairs on your head or the lack of it makes you proud?

  1. I so agree with you, Vinitha! Age shouldn’t restrict us from doing what we want to do. I was really excited when I turned 30, and now I’m looking forward to 40! 😉

  2. Iam amazed to see many people at plus 60 enjoying hiking and biking in USA and also many religiously going to gym working hard than young people. I want to be like that when I age if my health permits.

  3. I think the ‘age’ factor affects people in different ways. If physical beauty matters to you, then, it certainly does seem to affect you a lot, especially when you start ‘looking’ old. To me, personally, with age, comes the inner growth that matters more and I think, as we grow older, we begin to appreciate many more things that didn’t matter to us earlier. I find I’m much more accepting and grateful, much calmer and much more resilient now, than when I was younger. These things to me, are way more important than grey hair or wrinkles around my eyes! In England, I used to often hear my friends say that once you turn 30, life changes for you. I never felt that way, so I could never understand why they said that. But, it did affect many people I know of, who went into a depressive state just worrying over their age. Not a very sensible thing to do, I know, but some people are like that!

  4. I married at 30, became a mother at 34 and quit my Banking job to become a writer at 36. I’m 37 now and probably the happiest. Indeed আগে is just a number for me.

  5. I think you are as old or as young as you want to be. I’m nearly 60 and I’m doing more things now than when I was much younger. I think my life is much richer now – and I don’t mean money, though that’s true too!

  6. Of course age matters. There are certain things you can only do at a certain age – like drinking, smoking, getting married , standing for elections – you get the drift don’t you ?
That said , I don’t feel a bit different the day I turn older but definitely over the ages, I look older…. I’m glad I’m getting older – there’s so many things I can do – forget about being thin or fat , forget about saying things without thinking …..

  7. Age should be the last thing that people base their dreams on. For me, age doesn’t matter at all. As long as I’m getting to live the life I want without any regrets.

  8. Age is just a number. I loved turning 30 and next year, I turn 35. My 30s have been my growth years I reckon and while there have been ups and downs, I have learnt so much. I’ll admit I’m not a fan of the greys but you can always colour that! 😀

  9. My only worry with age is that I am losing years of my life. I know it sounds funny cos we are all mortals but for me, I think as I age, so will my parents. Their health will deteriorate, I won’t have as much life left in me to run around yada yada yada. VT will age and one day one of us will leave the other and then I will be all alone. I am sure you are getting the drift.
Other than that, I totally agree that age is in the head. I am my most physically active at 36 and I feel much fitter than when I was 26. All that part I am cool with 🙂
