Welcome 2019

A very Happy New Year to you all!

With the new year, we get an opportunity to start fresh. I’ve been choosing a Word of the Year for the last four years. The concept is to set a word as a guide for the next 365 days.

Last year I chose three words FOCUS, BELIEVE and BALANCE as my words. Unfortunately, I forgot about these words and lost my focus, shattered my beliefs and tumbled more often than not! In the previous years, I had my word of the year written down in the front page of my journal, hence helping me remember the word and its purpose. Last year it skipped my mind to jot the words down on the journal and throughout the year I had no reason to remember them, though, the need to remember the words were exceedingly high. It’s only in December I realized that I’ve completely forgotten about my words of 2018.

Well, so it failed one year doesn’t stop me from doing the exercise this year, does it now?

I have been brainstorming ideas for my word of 2019 for the last couple of weeks. I want it to give me direction as well as help me get back on my path if and when I lose my way. Also, I want the word to reflect my goals for the year.

Now, my goals are simple – to do the things that make me happy and to reduce stress. At the end of 2019, I want to reflect back with less stress than I had in 2018. I know life is uncertain and there will be reasons to stress out, but I would like to avoid the self-manifested stress in 2019.

And so, I landed on the word for 2019 – INDULGE.

I would like to indulge in my writing, my thoughts, my wishes, and my dreams this year.

I would like to indulge in ideas and goals without the fear of losing.

I want to indulge in being productive and living each day as it comes without tiring myself out.

I am looking forward to indulging in being kind and being positive.

I want to indulge in life without the fear of not being in control.

As reducing stress is my primary goal this year, I’m hoping that this word would help me in taking it easy when my mind wanders off to anxiety and apprehensions.

Too much to expect from a word? I know, setting a word is easier than making that word complete the list of goals I want to accomplish. After all, this is no magic word. And I don’t expect it to be either. I’m only planning to depend on the word and this list as a reminder when I get stuck. That’s all.

One of the major changes I am hoping to bring in this year is to appreciate myself. I haven’t got a clue about how to do that, however, I am looking forward to learning this new trick.

So, here I am welcoming 2019 with the hope that the new year is going to be kind to me.

  1. That is a BEAUTIFUL word, Vinitha 🙂 Too often we forget to enjoy ourselves while setting goals and making resolutions. It’s important to enjoy everything. (Also the key theme of the book I am currently reading. It’s a non-fiction book titled ‘Grit’ by Angela Duckworth. Fabulous book if you’re into non fiction). She speaks of how we must both enjoy something completely and allow ourselves to work hard at it to fully be committed to the task at hand. So passion+ perseverance is what makes up grit.

In this case, I’d say ‘indulge’ encompasses both.

Wishing you a bright, cheery, wonderful 2019 with lots to indulge in all year long.

    1. I’m hoping to start reading non-fictions this year. Will keep Grit in mind. Thanks Shailaja.
I learned that I have been driving myself crazy in the name of working hard and realizing dreams. Outcome – no dreams achieved and a crazy over worked me. So far this I’m applying my choice of word. Not being well at the moment another reason to take care of myself.
Passion and perseverance – need to remember that.
      Thanks Shailaja! ❤️

  2. I love the word ‘Indulge’. For me life is all about indulging in the things that make you happy and gives you peace. Indulge in what makes you happy and life feels better.

    Happy New Year!!!

  3. I love your WOTY, Vinitha! I’m so glad you chose to follow your heart and find happiness in all those things that makes you happy. I wish you a full and wonderfully enriching year ahead. Do keep sharing your experiences from time to time and keep us posted on your progress. I have been reading all the lovely WOTY posts and chiding myself for not having written mine yet. Now, off to my desk to wrap up the year in review.

    1. Nothing can be deemed bad when the outcome of even the worst happens to be the beginning of something good, can it now? I mean yes, it took a whole lot burnout to finally stop me from neglecting myself and start working on appreciating myself. And I have been working on it everyday, trying to form a habit of appreciating myself. Not to stress about it is also another learning but I believe it would be okay if I go on the principle of ‘take it easy’. Nothing is set in stone, right?
Thank you for being a wonderful friend, Esha. I love each one of you who are always there to hold my hand, albeit virtually, showing me a world of kindness. I’m grateful always to carry on forever with friends like you by my side. 💖
I just visited your blogs to read on your reflections and WOTY. I know that you are busy at the moment, but please do write them once you are less busy. Would love to read.
Wish you and your family a prosperous and peaceful 2019 ahead! ❤️

  4. After keeping the family upto date, indulging will be good for you. It will automatically become your ‘me-time’ and so you can appreciate yourself. Wish you good luck.

    1. My me-time was overwhelmingly busy with all sorts of work. So even when I was relaxing I wasn’t relaxing. Hence the need to teach myself some much needed self appreciation lessons. More like this year my project is me. 😁 Let’s hope that I won’t abandon myself halfway through. Glad to see you here, Lata. Will visit Kaapitimes soon. Do write fictions and musings at least monthly. I miss reading them!
Wish you a fabulous year ahead! ❤️

  5. Love your choice of word, Vineetha!
We are so busy thinking of and caring for others that we often forget ourselves. Indulge yourself by all means! You have a whole year to do it!
    Have a fabulous 2019!

  6. Indulge! Such a nice word of the year! May you have the best of things to indulge in.

Wishing you a very happy 2019, Vinitha. Wishing you the best of everything.

  7. Indulge is a lovely word Vinitha! Also, with appreciating yourself, maybe have a read of Kristen Neff’s work on self-compassion. I’ve read bits and pieces and am yet to read her book but intend on doing it this year. I wish you a wonderful 2019 that is less stressful and more indulgent! 🙂

  8. Wish you a very happy new year Vini! Your WOTY is fabulous as it clearly focuses on self love first! More power to you on this and I really hope 2019 will see focus on indulgences like never before! One life – so live it up girl!!

  9. I like your word of the year, Vinitha. To me indulge is something you do for yourself and that is just perfect. I really wish you joy and more self appreciation this year. Start small and do small things that make you feel good on a daily basis.

Best wishes and a very happy New Year!

  10. Hi Vinitha, Indulge is a beautiful and positive word. I especially loved when you said indulge in fulfilling your goals without the fear of losing. Often we are so scared of losing that we stop trying. I would also want you to indulge in self-care to stay stress free. Hope you have a great year ahead. All the best.

  11. It’s easy to forget when life gets busy. Hopefully this year you will be able to indulge in things you love. Would love to read more from you 😊 Wish you a wonderful new year.

  12. I feel often we women fail on appreciating ourselves. and it doesnt just stop there. We end up criticising ourselves way too much too. So heres to you appreciating yourself more cause you surely deserve it all :))

  13. Yess…..you so need to indulge in your wishes, dreams, hobbies, health and peace of mind, Vini!
But, do remember one thing that I learned last year…and I don’t wish to dampen your spirits..but, the Universe is one smart cookie and makes sure you remember what you promise to do! Last year, I chose HOPE and FAITH, and I was tested for both of these through every damn thing that came my way!
So, despite whatever comes in your way, make sure you stick to your WOTY. You might have to fight to find the precious time you need to indulge your wishes, but, do it…fight for every minute. However, don’t do it at the cost of your mental health. Let your peace of mind precede all else….Take one day at a time and do not plan ahead. And, I am sure you will have a better time! Just like I have decided to do after having experienced 2018!

Love you,my dear friend! WIsh you a beautiful, peaceful and a healthy new year! May you INDULGE to your heart’s content!

  14. I LOVE your WOTY. And it’s about time you choose to indulge yourself and choose happiness, dearie. But don’t beat yourself up over what you consider past failures and stresses. The truth is we all struggle. And none of us have achieved true balance. All we can ever do is our best. Just know that, and trust in yourself to do it everyday. And I know you will ace this word of the year.

Wishing you a calmer, more happier 2019! Loads of love and tight virtual hugs.

  15. Indulge is the right word for you. I know you a bit I can feel that you need that word and let it stay with you for more than an year.
I would say, start small. Small things are easier but then when we wait for big things, they take time and we think there is a delay. So pick small moments to indulge yourself. Eat what you like or run a quick errand for yourself. Write that verse you wanted to and post that picture. I know easier said than done but I feel you will be able to. Don’t do for ticking it off but to for yourself. That should work, Vinitha. Good luck and you know I will be around for that little pep talk 🙂
